Let It Matter

One of my favourite songs got me thinking lately.

Let It Matter by Johnnyswim. Have a listen:

I don't want to feel better
I don't want to feel good
I want to feel it hurt like losing someone should

I'm gonna let my heart break
I'm gonna let it burn
I'm gonna stake my claim with the flame I know it hurled

Run baby run
Don't you know I've tried
But escape is a waste ain't no use in hiding
you know the best way over's through

So if it matters let it matter
If your heart's breaking let it ache
Catch those pieces as they scatter
Know your hurt is not in vain

Don't hide yourself from the horror
Hurt today here tomorrow
If it's fragile and it shatters
Let it matter, let it matter

They say you know it ain't easy
I wouldn't want it to be
Cause ease is for the shallow
But we were from the deep

I don't want no distractions
Don't try to please me for one day
You are worth the joy my love,
you are worth the pain

Run baby run
Don't you know I've tried
But escape is a waste ain't no use in hiding
you know the best way over's through

If it matters let it matter
If your heart's breaking let it ache
Catch those pieces as they scatter
Know your hurt is not in vain

Don't hide yourself from the horror
Hurt today here tomorrow
If it's fragile and it shatters
Let it matter, let it matter

I assume most people would agree that life nowadays is a lot faster than it was, let’s say, 40 years ago. That applies to pretty much every aspects of life, like the idea of having to heal faster.
I remember when I was ill as a child, instead of running to the GP for something to make me feel better, my mum would always prescribe simple rest and maybe add a few home remedies like tea. Lots of tea that is. When I had a bad cold or fever, before my mum got antibiotics I stayed at home from school and in my bed – we simply gave it some time. The human body was created pretty awesomely and if we’re fairly healthy it does a really good job of healing itself in its own time.

However, life is a lot faster now. Work has to go fast and as much as possible has to be done in the least amount of time. And a lot of people simply can not even take a day off to recover from being ill. We take some tablets and keep going….. until one day our body is like ‘Nuh-uh! That’s enough!’ – and we crash.

That also affects our emotional healing, I reckon.
We rush each other to feel better because, ya know, something is wrong if you’re devastated, sad or heartbroken. Life should be fun and exciting at all times, but we all know it simply is not.
Sometimes people tell you to get over a grief that they are not burdened with.
Of course, we don’t all want to drown in grief and self-pity, but often all we need is a little more time.  To heal.
Johnnyswim say in this commentary, ‘You can tell me you love me, you can give me a hug. But maybe don’t tell me it’s going to be alright just yet. Right now it’s not okay – and that’s okay!’

What I love about this song is, that they’re saying ’It’s okay to feel the pain… Actually it’s not just okay, but it’s good and necessary to not be okay with things for some time.’

‘If it matters, let it matter’
If something matters to you then let it – simply let it matter-
Yes, it will hurt! Some things we don’t just walk off. And I believe a lot of people today feel like they can not feel. (see what I did there?! ha… but seriously, it’s rather ironic) They can not allow themselves to feel because they will come across as weak and we surely do not want to show emotions and be real.

If you’ve lost a person you really cared about, may it be through death or because they walked out of your life, it hurts. It sucks. And it will take time to walk through that – ‘Feel it hurt like losing someone should.’

Let it matter, guys!
